Together with nutritional counseling, herbal therapy is considered the primary therapeutic method of Chinese internal medicine. There are approximately 500 Chinese herbs that are in use today, of which 250 are most commonly used. Herbs are typically combined in individually-tailored formulas (typically containing between 3 and 25 herbs) designed to suit the physical and emotional constitution of the patient. All herbs used are of the highest quality and are tested and certified for purity and safety.
Chinese dietary recommendations are usually made according to the patient's individual condition in relation to Chinese medicine theory. The "five flavors," an important aspect of Chinese herbalism, indicate what function various types of food play in the body. A balanced diet contributes to the balance of the five functional flavors. To help obtain better nutritional and energetic vitality certain foods and herbs are prescribed to restore the body's balance.
